The rules of the game
Mechanics
The media nominates. The crowd lights the spotlight. The official title goes to the person the most different people voted for.
- 01Nominees '26: the media decidesThe nominees are the names that reputable, approved sources call hot: gossip, celebrity, fashion and farándula press such as Cosmopolitan, Us Weekly, Page Six, TMZ, Vogue, GQ, Semana and Infobae. Once a month we read what they published in the last 6 months and keep every name that appears in a headline. Nominees are ranked by the number of different outlets that name them. Nobody can pay to be on this list.
- 02Spotlight '26: the votes decideThe Spotlight is the live board. Everyone named by the media is on it from day one with zero votes, no paid nomination needed. Whoever has the most paid votes is on top. A vote costs $1.99 and counts once we have received the payment.
- 03Your own nominationAnyone can add a name to the Spotlight. A nomination costs $199 and counts as the first vote; extra votes are $1.99 each. If the nominee cannot afford it, use the free nomination. It activates at 101 votes ($1.99 each). Then our staff research the nominee's finances and interview them. If they truly could not pay, all 101 votes count as real votes and the nomination is free. If it was not true, the first 100 votes pay the $199 fee and one vote counts. If 101 votes are not reached by the end of the year, the money is not refundable; we ask everyone who nominated or voted whether to nominate again at no extra cost, and if nobody replies the money goes to another pending nominee.
- 04The official result: voters, not votesOn 31 December the official Hottest of the year is decided by the number of different voters. Ten votes from one person are one voter. The Spotlight can be bought, the official title cannot: more money buys more attention, never a bigger count of people.

Hottest Ever
- Hottest Ever counts how many different media outlets and lists named each person, over every source we hold. Every outlet counts once, a list published by one outlet is one voice, and names named equally often share the place.
- What is counted so far: the media of 2020 to 2025, read year by year, and the lists of Maxim, People, ESPN, The Sun, Ranker, Total Shape, The Athletic Build, 107.5 The Fan, SoYummy, the Toronto Sun and IMDb. The oldest list we hold so far is from 2006; older decades, back to 1946, are added as we find the lists.
- When another outlet only repeats a title (for example People's Sexiest Man Alive), it is not counted as a second voice. See the Hottest Ever lists →
The small print
- A name only counts if it literally appears in the headline of an article published in the last 6 months. Every outlet and article is linked under the entry.
- The lists are rebuilt once a month. News and the daily summary are written every day.
- Votes and nominations are paid by card (Stripe) or by bank transfer on an invoice. They appear on the boards only after the payment is confirmed; nominations are reviewed by our editors before they are published.
- Nominations, payments and votes are non-refundable.
- Outlets can be proposed on the Sources page; approved sources are the ones the nominees are read from.
- It is a ranking of who the media call hot and who the public backs, not our own judgement. What defines hot?
